Michael Renner

Michael Renner is professor for Visual Communication and head of the Institute for Digital Communication Environments at the Basel Academy of Art and Design, Switzerland. He experienced the digital revolution first-hand working for Apple Computer and The Understanding Business in California, just after completing his education at the former Basel School of Design. Renner’s practical, pedagogical, theoretical and research-oriented design activities explore the meaning of images in the context of today’s digital communication channels. Renner was member of the board of “eikones,” the Swiss National Center of Competence in Iconic Research (2005 – 2013) and responsible since for many funded research projects. Renner has co-edited books like “What Images Do”, is visiting professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and on the editorial board of “Visible Language”.

His workshop addresses the potential of the writing gesture to overcome what we can imagine as a design result before we start the process of analogue mark making and juxtaposes this process to digital design processes and their potential.
