What is the AGI Open?

Each year members of Alliance Graphique Internationale convene in a different city for their AGI Congress. Here, members meet in a spirit of friendship and kinship, to discuss and exchange views on design, and of course to learn about the host city.

Since 2010, under the presidency of Paula Scher, AGI Open has run concurrently with the Congress. These industry and student-focused conferences have taken place in Porto, Barcelona, Paris, Seoul, Biel/Bienne, São Paulo, London, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Rotterdam, Trieste, Auckland and Basel.

Central to the success of AGI Open is that members freely participate in talks and events that extend knowledge and encourage generations of students and designers in attendance, some of whom will go on to become members themselves in the future.

AGI Open is a not-for-profit event. All AGI members pay for their expenses and receive no fee for their participation.

What is AGI?

Founded in 1951 by two Swiss and three French graphic designers, AGI’s mission is to promote graphic design by means of talks, publications and educational activities.

Currently AGI has a membership of 543 professionals from 47 countries. The most influential personalities in the history of graphic design were or are on the list: A.M. Cassandre, F.H.K. Henrion, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Armin Hofmann, Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Massimo Vignelli, Wim Crouwel, to name a few— but also outstanding contemporary practitioners.

AGI is continuing to expand and diversify in medium, ethnicity, practice, education and geography.
