Kirsty Carter & Emma Thomas

A Practice for Everyday Life (APFEL) is a studio for creative direction, design and type founded by Kirsty Carter & Emma Thomas in 2003. Through research and consultancy, they create meaningful, original design across brand identities, campaigns, digital, publications and type design. The studio’s work has developed in collaborations with global brands such as Aesop, Birkenstock, Erdem, JW Anderson, John Lobb and Vitra, as well as with artists, curators, and cultural institutions including David Zwirner, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Gagosian, The Hepworth Wakefield, the V&A and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 2020, they launched APFEL Type, creating bespoke typefaces and publishing a collection of retail fonts. Emma & Kirsty are currently co-Presidents of the AGI UK Chapter.
